About An Evening of Dance Music

At the heart of An Evening of Dance Music is a simple yet powerful idea: music shaped by movement. Each work on the programme is rooted in dance traditions — whether drawn from tango, folk music, Broadway choreography, or national dance forms — yet reimagined for the concert hall with sophistication and depth.

The evening opens with Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion and Libertango, works that embody the expressive soul of Argentine tango through rich harmonies and unmistakable rhythmic drive. Anchoring the programme is Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.16, a cornerstone of the classical repertoire, whose dramatic gestures and folk-inspired rhythms bring both virtuosity and lyricism to the forefront.

Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dances from On the Town injects the concert with theatrical flair and urban energy, reflecting the composer’s unique ability to merge classical writing with jazz and Broadway idioms. The programme concludes with Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, a luminous work inspired by American folk traditions, celebrated for its open textures, gentle optimism, and enduring appeal.

Together, these works form a cohesive musical journey — diverse in style, yet unified by rhythm, movement, and the expressive power of dance.
