Candide Overture

Leonard Bernstein

Composed in 1956, the Candide Overture is one of Leonard Bernstein’s most brilliant and enduring orchestral works. Written as the opening to his operetta Candide, based on Voltaire’s satirical novella, the overture captures the wit, energy, and irreverent spirit of the story in just under five minutes.

From its dazzling opening fanfare, the music bursts forward with relentless momentum, driven by sparkling rhythms, playful melodies, and virtuosic orchestration. Bernstein masterfully weaves together themes from the operetta, creating a vibrant musical tapestry that is both humorous and exhilarating. The overture demands exceptional precision and agility from the orchestra, particularly the strings, whose rapid passages and crisp articulation give the piece its signature brilliance.

Despite its light-hearted character, the music reflects Bernstein’s unique ability to blend classical technique with theatrical flair, making it equally at home in the concert hall and on the stage. Today, the Candide Overture stands as a concert favourite, celebrated for its infectious energy and sheer joy.

Fun Fact

The Candide Overture is often used to open concerts because of its high energy, but it’s also notoriously challenging, especially for the violins, who have to play at lightning speed almost nonstop!

The Greatest Showman Medley

Various Artists

The Greatest Show • A Million Dreams • Come Alive • Never Enough • This Is Me • From Now On

  • Feat. Malaysian Voices Collective
  • Arr. by Timmy Lim

Few modern film soundtracks have captured the global imagination quite like The Greatest Showman (2017). With music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the film blends contemporary pop sensibilities with theatrical storytelling, resulting in a score that is both emotionally resonant and irresistibly uplifting. This medley brings together some of its most iconic songs, tracing a journey of ambition, hope, identity, and triumph.

The medley opens with “The Greatest Show,” a bold and electrifying introduction that sets the tone with its sense of spectacle and grandeur. Its driving rhythms and commanding brass lines evoke the excitement of stepping into a world of possibility. This energy gives way to “A Million Dreams,” a more reflective and lyrical moment that captures the innocence of aspiration and the quiet determination to imagine something greater.

With “Come Alive,” the music begins to expand outward, encouraging self-discovery and the courage to embrace one’s true self. The mood then shifts to the soaring ballad “Never Enough,” where its sense of longing and vulnerability is carried through the unified voice of the choir, creating a fuller, more expansive emotional sound.

The emotional core of the medley arrives with “This Is Me,” an anthem of resilience and self-acceptance that has become synonymous with empowerment. Its driving pulse and choral textures create a sense of collective strength, transforming personal struggle into a shared declaration of identity.

Finally, the medley culminates in “From Now On,” a triumphant and cathartic conclusion that reflects growth, redemption, and renewed purpose. As the music builds layer upon layer, it brings together the themes of the entire journey of ambition, belonging, and transformation, ending on a note of exuberant celebration.

Reimagined in a symphonic setting, this medley highlights the cinematic scale of the original score while allowing the orchestra and choir to bring new depth and colour to these familiar songs. It is both a tribute to the spirit of the film and a celebration of the universal desire to dream, to belong, and to become.

Fun Fact

“This Is Me” won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song and was later nominated for an Academy Award, becoming one of the film’s most iconic and empowering anthems.

Defying Gravity

from Wicked

Stephen Schwartz

  • Feat. Jaclyn Victor
  • Arranged by Daryl McKenzie
  • Edited/Adapted by Isaac Chia

Few songs in modern musical theatre have achieved the iconic status of “Defying Gravity.” Composed by Stephen Schwartz for the 2003 musical Wicked, the song marks a pivotal moment in the story, where Elphaba, the misunderstood “Wicked Witch of the West,” embraces her identity and chooses to stand against expectation and control.

Musically, the piece is a masterclass in dramatic build and release. It begins with a sense of inner conflict, gradually expanding in range, intensity, and orchestral colour as Elphaba’s resolve strengthens. The song’s structure mirrors this transformation, moving from introspection to declaration, culminating in one of the most powerful climaxes in contemporary musical theatre.

At its core, Defying Gravity is an anthem of self-liberation. Its themes of courage, individuality, and defiance resonate far beyond the narrative of Wicked, making it a universal expression of breaking free from limitations and embracing one’s true self.

In this concert setting, the song takes on a new dimension through the symphonic arrangement, where the orchestra amplifies its emotional arc and scale. Performed by Jaclyn Victor, whose commanding vocal presence and emotional depth bring both power and nuance to the piece, this rendition captures the spirit of the original while offering a fresh, resonant interpretation.

Fun Fact

The famous final “battle cry” note in Defying Gravity is one of the most anticipated moments in musical theatre, so much so that audiences often applaud mid-song before it even ends!

You Will Be Found

from Dear Evan Hansen

Pasek & Paul

  • Feat. Malaysian Voices Collective
  • Arr. by Greg Eaton

Composed by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, “You Will Be Found” is one of the most poignant and resonant songs from the musical Dear Evan Hansen (2015). At its core, the song speaks to themes of isolation, connection, and the human need to be seen and understood.

The piece begins with a sense of quiet vulnerability, reflecting moments of loneliness and uncertainty. As the music unfolds, it gradually builds in strength and texture, evolving into a powerful message of hope and reassurance. The lyrics offer a simple yet profound reminder that even in our darkest moments, we are not alone, and that connection can emerge in unexpected ways.

In this choral setting, the song takes on an especially moving dimension. The message is carried collectively, transforming individual vulnerability into a shared expression of empathy and support. The choir’s unified sound reinforces the central idea of the piece: that strength is found in togetherness, and that every voice matters.

Supported by the orchestra, the music expands into a rich and uplifting soundscape, culminating in a stirring and affirming conclusion. You Will Be Found has become an anthem for a generation, celebrated for its sincerity and emotional impact, and continues to resonate deeply with audiences around the world.

Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! (2001) is a dazzling celebration of music, romance, and theatrical spectacle, renowned for its bold fusion of contemporary pop songs within a period setting. Various Artists

Somewhere • Over the Rainbow • Somewhere Out There

  • Feat. Jaclyn Victor & Malaysian Voices Collective
  • Arr. by Azhad Sulaiman

Across generations of musical theatre and film, the idea of “somewhere” has come to represent hope, longing, and the promise of a better place. This medley brings together three iconic songs from different eras, united by a shared emotional thread: the belief that beyond the present moment lies something brighter.

The medley opens with “Somewhere” from West Side Story (Leonard Bernstein & Stephen Sondheim), a timeless expression of yearning for peace and belonging. With its sweeping melody and tender lyricism, the song captures a quiet but profound hope that there is a place where differences dissolve and love can exist freely.

This sense of wonder continues with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz (Harold Arlen & E.Y. Harburg), one of the most beloved songs in cinematic history. Its gentle, soaring lines evoke a dreamlike world just beyond reach, where troubles melt away and imagination takes flight.

The medley then moves to “Somewhere Out There” from An American Tail (James Horner, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil), a heartfelt ballad of connection and reassurance. Though separated by distance, the song affirms that hope and love can bridge even the widest divides, offering comfort in the idea that we are never truly alone.

In this full ensemble setting featuring orchestra, choir, and Jaclyn Victor, the medley expands into a rich and layered soundscape. The interplay between solo voice and collective harmony reflects the journey from individual longing to shared hope, as each song flows seamlessly into the next. Together, they form a luminous musical narrative that speaks to the enduring human desire to dream, to belong, and to believe in a place called “somewhere.”

Fun Fact

All three songs in this medley have become cultural classics in their own right, each earning major award recognition and Somewhere Over the Rainbow is consistently ranked among the greatest songs of all time.

Miss Saigon Medley

Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil

Overture • Sun and Moon • The Heat is On in Saigon • Last Night Of The World • The American Dream

  • Arr. by Calvin Custer
  • Edited/Adapted by Isaac Chia

Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s Miss Saigon (1989) is a powerful and deeply emotional musical set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Inspired by Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, the story explores themes of love, loss, sacrifice, and displacement, following the tragic relationship between Kim, a young Vietnamese woman, and Chris, an American soldier.

This medley traces the emotional arc of the musical through some of its most memorable songs. It opens with the Overture, setting a sombre and reflective tone, foreshadowing the sweeping drama and emotional intensity that follows. The music then blossoms into “Sun and Moon,” a lyrical duet that captures the fragile beauty of a love formed in the midst of conflict.

The atmosphere shifts dramatically with “The Heat is On in Saigon,” a high-energy, rhythm-driven number that vividly portrays the chaos, urgency, and sensory overload of wartime Saigon. Its pulsating energy and bold orchestration create a striking contrast to the intimacy of the preceding moments.

From this intensity emerges “Last Night of the World,” one of the musical’s most tender and heartfelt songs. Gentle and introspective, it reflects a longing to hold onto love in the face of uncertainty, offering a moment of calm amidst the turmoil.

The medley concludes with “The American Dream,” a satirical and exuberant number that blends humour with sharp social commentary. Beneath its flashy surface lies a critique of ambition and illusion, bringing the narrative full circle with both energy and irony.

Presented in a symphonic concert setting, this medley highlights the rich emotional contrasts and cinematic scope of Miss Saigon, moving seamlessly between intimacy and spectacle. Together, these songs form a compelling musical journey, one that captures the human cost of conflict and the enduring power of love.

Fun Fact

The original West End production of Miss Saigon (1989, Theatre Royal Drury Lane) featured a full-sized replica helicopter that appeared to land on stage. Using a combination of intricate mechanics, lighting, sound design, and projections, the production convincingly simulated a real UH-1 Huey helicopter in motion. The sequence required precise coordination and engineering, and quickly became one of the most iconic and technically ambitious moments in musical theatre history.

Send in the Clowns

from A Little Night of Music

Stephen Sondheim

  • Feat. Jaclyn Victor
  • Arr. by Azhad Sulaiman

Composed by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music, “Send in the Clowns” is one of the most celebrated songs in modern musical theatre. Written for the character Desirée, the song captures a moment of quiet realisation as she reflects on love, missed opportunities, and the bittersweet nature of timing.

Unlike many traditional Broadway songs, Send in the Clowns is deliberately understated. Its melody unfolds with a conversational quality, mirroring natural speech patterns rather than virtuosic display. This simplicity allows the emotional weight of the lyrics to take centre stage, drawing the listener into a deeply personal and introspective moment.

The title itself is drawn from theatrical tradition, where “sending in the clowns” signals that something has gone wrong and distraction is needed. Here, it becomes a poignant metaphor for life’s ironies, moments when expectations unravel and reality falls short of what might have been.

In this performance, Jaclyn Victor brings her signature vocal depth and expressive nuance to the piece, shaping each phrase with sensitivity and emotional clarity. Supported by the orchestra, the song unfolds with quiet intensity, allowing its themes of regret, acceptance, and reflection to resonate deeply.

Fun Fact

Unlike most Broadway songs, Send in the Clowns has no traditional chorus, making it feel more like a continuous, reflective monologue.

Selections from Cabaret

John Kander

Willkommen • Money, Money •
• Entr’acte • Cabaret

  • Arr. by Ted Parson

Composed by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb, Cabaret (1966) is one of the most influential musicals of the 20th century. Set in 1930s Berlin during the final days of the Weimar Republic, the musical juxtaposes dazzling entertainment with the looming shadows of political and social upheaval. Through its unforgettable songs, Cabaret captures both the allure and the fragility of a world on the brink of change.

This medley draws together key musical moments that reflect the contrasting moods of the show. It begins with “Willkommen” (often known as “Welcome”), an electrifying introduction by the Emcee that invites the audience into the Kit Kat Club, a place of escapism, decadence, and illusion. With its infectious rhythm and theatrical flair, the song sets the tone for a world where reality is momentarily suspended.

The atmosphere shifts with “Money, Money,” a playful yet pointed number that explores society’s obsession with wealth and materialism. Beneath its catchy, upbeat exterior lies a sharp commentary on values and survival in uncertain times.

The Entr’acte provides a musical bridge, recalling themes from the score while heightening the sense of tension beneath the surface. As the story darkens, the medley moves toward its emotional climax with “Cabaret,” the show’s iconic title song. Bold, defiant, and bittersweet, it embodies a philosophy of living fully in the present, even in the face of uncertainty and inevitable change.

The medley highlights the striking contrasts that define Cabaret, from exuberance to introspection, from glamour to underlying unease. Through its vivid melodies and dramatic shifts in tone, the music offers both entertainment and reflection, capturing the enduring power and relevance of this landmark work.

Fun Fact

The role of the Emcee in Cabaret has been portrayed in many distinctive ways over the years. Joel Grey originated the role, while Alan Cumming and Eddie Redmayne each brought their own unique and memorable interpretations.
